Hirst Conservation undertakes the
conservation of metal, including bronze, brass and iron
objects and artefacts, ranging from brass plaques to bronze
sculptures.
Our conservators carry out condition
assessments, diagnosis of corrosion types and sources using
various sampling analysis techniques. Recommendations are
then made for the cleaning, repair and stabilisation methods
appropriate for each specific object in its context and
environment.
These
recommendations may include:
-
Light surface cleaning and removal of
surface lying accretions.
-
Removal of inappropriate or severely
degraded coatings.
-
Repair and consolidation of damaged
elements.
-
Removal of unsightly corrosion products
and stains from the metal surfaces where harmful to
stability of the object and/or aesthetically
displeasing.
-
Repatination.
-
Application of stable and protective
surface coatings where required.
