Lime Plastering and Stuccowork

Hirst Conservation undertakes all aspects of both internal plasterwork and external render and stuccowork. As well as providing conservation and restoration expertise on existing plasterwork, our plaster specialists can undertake new plastering projects using traditional materials and techniques. Work ranges from the stabilization of highly intricate moulded or cast decorative ceilings within public buildings to undertaking extensive rendering projects on private properties.

The services offered include:

  • Initial survey work to determine the extent of conservation and the type of repairs required

  •  Analysis of existing material to ensure compatibility of repair mortars and plasters

  •  Lime plastering onto masonry, reed and lath

  •  Running/ replication of plaster mouldings in situ

  •  Fibrous plasterwork

  •  Ceiling suspension and securing, using both traditional methods and, where appropriate, more modern materials

  •  Mould making and casting of decorative elements

  •  Consultation on major conservation and restoration projects

Some of our projects include:

  • Cusworth Hall, Doncaster – Lime plastering to the interior (on lath, reed and masonry), exterior rendering to the courtyard and Brew House, recreation and re and decorative and fibrous plasterwork in the Paines Chapel. Ceiling suspension and securing.

  • Assembly House, Norwich – Reinstatement of decorative plaster reinstatement after fire throughout Assembly room (1754). Use of new material and salvaged.

  • Chepstow Castle, Chepstow - Conservation of 11th century decorative plasterwork.

  • St Pancras Chambers, London – Survey of historic plasterwork and consultants for plaster restoration project

  • Waterloo House, Leeds - Former Assembly House (1777). Conservation of original plaster ceilings and reinstatement of missing columns.

  • Moggerhanger House, Bedfordshire – Conservation of historic plasterwork including re-fixing of historic enrichments

  • House of Lords, London - Conservation of plaster plaques
