This is a Grade II* listed church, designed for the Franciscans by Edward Welby Pugin and built between 1863 and 1872. Several stages of repair and re-decoration took place relating to the significant dates in the history of the church and Franciscans in Gorton.
Our involvement in the project dates back to 2004, but the preliminary investigation was undertaken in 2014 and involved a full condition survey, limited architectural paint research and cleaning trials, as well as emergency treatment of two canvas paintings.

Survey report recommendations formed the basis for the preparation of a schedule of conservation works and subsequent treatment, which adopted a very conservative approach of repair and stabilisation with careful cleaning, the extent of which was dictated by microscopic investigation on and off site. Restoration works were limited to the re-creation of the Victorian tiled floor, for safety reasons. Additionally, three areas of uncovering to early decorative schemes were created for educational purposes. The project incorporated several presentations for various audiences and a student placement. Site management had to be maintained at a very high level due to the presence of members of the public attending events and activities taking place in the building
