Doors Opening at Durham Cathedral

July 8, 2020 | By |

The extraordinary north and south doors of Durham Cathedral are now open for private prayer and quiet reflection. We were delighted to have the opportunity to survey at the Cathedral after so many months of lockdown, just as the vergers were hard at work preparing the Cathedral, cleaning and demarking pews for safe distancing.

Carbon dating has indicated that both the north and south doors are 12th century and original to this quite remarkable building, although the very splendid and much photographed knocker is a more recent reproduction. Recent completion of the lobbies project has totally reframed the internal divisions around each door, allowing full view of their epic scale from the building interior.
