Vacancy: Conservation Manager

We are seeking to appoint a proactive and experienced Conservation Manager to join our team and support the delivery of conservation projects. This role combines practical problem-solving with client liaison, team coordination, and commercial oversight, ensuring our projects are delivered safely, on time, and to budget.

 

About Us

Hirst Conservation is a multi-disciplinary practice with 40 years of experience in the conservation of historic buildings, decorative surfaces and fine art. From our base in Lincolnshire, we work nationally and internationally on some of the most significant heritage sites.

The Role

Position: Conservation Manager
Location: UK with some international travel

Hours: Full time, flexible/hybrid options considered
Salary: £40k–£50k, dependent on experience

As Conservation Manager, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of conservation projects ranging in value. You will work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and internal teams to ensure the smooth running of each project from pre-start through to completion and final reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, programme and manage conservation projects across multiple disciplines
  • Oversee site delivery, including managing site teams, subcontractors and logistics
  • Liaise with clients in a personable and professional manner
  • Contribute to tender submissions, estimates and pricing
  • Monitor project budgets, assess variations, and support cost control
  • Ensure Health & Safety and CDM compliance across all project activities
  • Provide clear, well-structured documentation, including risk assessments, reports and site records
  • Support and promote the highest conservation standards and ethical practice
  • Foster team development and contribute to CPD initiatives across the company

About You

You will be a confident communicator and organiser, experienced in delivering complex conservation, construction or heritage-based projects. You’ll have a strong understanding of site protocols, project programming, commercial control and client expectations.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience managing heritage or construction projects
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise competing demands
  • Familiarity with contract administration and CDM regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel

Desirable:

  • Background in conservation, architecture, surveying or historic buildings
  • CSCS card (or willingness to obtain)
  • Knowledge of conservation principles and heritage legislation
  • Familiarity with PASMA/IPAF training an advantage
  • Interest in developing skills across different conservation disciplines
